Five Burning Questions Regarding the New Kendrick Lamar Album

Hive Five: Our daily listicle of musical musings

Last night, Kendrick Lamar holed up in a Midtown Manhattan studio to preview songs from his good kid, m.A.A.d. city album (out October 22nd). But with only five songs being played, we still have a bunch of questions about one of the year’s most anticipated rap records.
1. How Involved Will Dr. Dre Be?
Kendrick is partly signed to Dre’s Aftermath label and his first single, “The Recipe,” featured a guest verse from the aging doc — but that song was also produced by Scoop DeVille. Last night Dre’s raps appeared on an untitled song, but that one was produced by Just Blaze, leaving questions over how much hands-on influence Dre will have over the sound and direction of the album.
2. How Pop Will Kendrick Go?
The much-rumored song with Lady Gaga, “Partynauseous,” was included in the playback session, and “Poetic Justice” features both a guest turn from Drake and a hearty sample from Janet Jackson‘s “Anytime, Anyplace.” Does this hint at Kendrick aiming for the pop heights?
3. Will The Funkmaster Flex Freestyle Be Used?
Before hitting up his listening session, young Kendrick stopped off at Funkmaster Flex’s radio show to drop rhymes over Notorious B.I.G.‘s “Who Shot Ya?” instrumental. The furious freestyle has been met with wide acclaim, which leaves us wondering whether the lyrics might get shoe-horned into  in some sort of bonus fashion.
4. Will Erykah Badu Be a Late Guest to the Party?
At a short playback session earlier this month down in the D.M.V., Kendrick repeated his admiration for Erykah Badu and teased that he still wants to work with her. There was nothing Badu-related played last night, but with only five songs seemingly signed-off on there’s still time to put in a call in, just so long as he doesn’t have any Wayne Coyne tricks up his sleeve.
5. Does Kendrick Have a Mega-Hit In Him?
Hit-Boy, the kid responsible for crafting Jay and ‘Ye’s gargantuan “N****s in Paris,” contributed production to the second track played last night. But with jazz-style undertones, it didn’t come over as something to blast Kendrick into the mainstream stratosphere. What’s going to be the defining track from good kid, m.A.A.d city?

'Entourage' movie script almost complete, says creator

The screenplay for the "Entourage" movie is nearly complete, reports the website Deadline. An appetite-whetting development for fans, it is also minor enough to pass for a plot detail that would close out a typical episode of the hit HBO show.
"Entourage" creator Doug Ellin said he is on page 110 of the script and plans to finish it by Sunday. He added the movie takes place six months after the scene outside the airplane in the September 2011 finale, which concluded the series' 96-episode run.
HBO still needs to approve the story before production begins. Network executives told Deadline they have heard only a "very general pitch."
The script is expected to cover Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven) running a studio, as well as all of the guys — Vince (Adrian Grenier), Johnny Drama (Kevin Dillon), Eric (Kevin Connolly) and Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) — "still hanging out and going to fun parties," Ellin said.

(CBS/AP) A tornado swept out of the sea and hit a beachfront neighborhood in New York City on Saturday, hurling debris in the air, knocking out power and startling residents who once thought of twisters as a Midwestern phenomenon.
A second tornado touched down nearby Canarsie in Brooklyn, with max estimated winds of 110 mph and on the ground for 1/2 mile.
Videos taken by bystanders at the Rockaway, Queens beachfront on showed a funnel cloud sucking up water, then sand, and then small pieces of buildings, as it moved through the Breezy Point section of the Rockaway peninsula in Queens.
Residents had advance notice. The National Weather Service had issued a tornado warning for Queens and Brooklyn at around 10:40 a.m. The storm took people by surprise anyway when it struck about 30 minutes later.
"I was showing videos of tornadoes to my 4-year-old on my phone, and two minutes later, it hit," said neighborhood resident Peter Maloney. "Just like they always say, it sounded like a train."
In the storm's wake, the community of seaside bungalows was littered with broken flower pots, knocked-down fences and smashed windows.
At the Breezy Point Surf Club, the tornado ripped the roofs off rows of cabanas, scattered deck chairs and left a heavy metal barbecue and propane tank sitting in the middle of a softball field, at least 100 yards from any nearby home.
"It picked up picnic benches. It picked up Dumpsters," said the club's general manager, Thomas Sullivan.
Half an hour later the weather was beautiful, but he had to close the club to clean up the damage.
Radar data, video and witness reports confirmed that the cyclone that hit New York City was a tornado, National Weather Service meteorologist Dan Hofmann said. He said an inspection team would assess the damage and before estimating the strength of the storm. Hofmann said some witnesses were reporting that the wind had been strong enough to lift cars off the pavement.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) confirmed that a funnel cloud was also sighted in Chantilly, Va., and a second possible funnel cloud has been sighted in Forestville, Md.
The utility Dominion reports about 95,600 customers are without power in Virginia.

The NWS has issued a public severe weather advisory for much of the Northeastern United States for Saturday afternoon and evening.

The advisory said significant severe thunderstorms, including the development of widespread damaging winds and a few tornadoes, are expected across portions of the lower Great Lakes, New England and Mid-Atlantic States Saturday afternoon into tonight.

Tornado watches are in effects for New York City and parts of New York State, Northeast Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont, until 10:00 p.m. Saturday.
The strong upper-level weather system will interact with a moist and unstable air mass as it moves into the northeastern U.S.

Areas most likely to experience this activity include Western and Central Connecticut, Northern Delaware, Western and Central Massachusetts, Northeastern Maryland, Southwestern New Hampshire, New Jersey, Central and Eastern New York, Eastern Pennsylvania, and Central and Southern Vermont.

"It was crazy," said neighborhood resident Joseph Mure, who was in the shower when the storm hit, and went outside to snap a picture of the retreating funnel. "There were a lot of sirens going off. You could see it twisting."

Lizann Maher, a worker at Kennedy's Restaurant at the edge of Jamaica Bay, said she saw a "swirling cone kind of thing with something flying in it" come down and then head back out into the water toward Brooklyn.

"It was scary. We have all glass so we kept saying, 'Get away from the glass!' just in case it did come back around," she said.

The tornado struck as part of a line of storms that were expected to bring damaging winds, hail, heavy rain and possibly more tornadoes throughout the mid-Atlantic and Northeast on Saturday. Across New York state, in Buffalo, strong winds from a broad front of thunderstorms blew roofing off of some buildings and sent bricks falling into the street.

The storm system killed four people, including a child, in Oklahoma on Friday.

4, including infant, killed in Okla. storms

Severe storms are also possible from the Northeastern United States into the Carolinas.

Damaging wind gusts will be common across the moderate risk area, and some locations could receive wind gusts of over 70 mph.

State and local emergency managers are monitoring this developing situation. Those in the threatened area are urged to review severe weather safety rules and to listen to radio, TV and NOAA weather radio for possible watches and warnings.
